Our Journey Starts with a Smile and Family Love
Last year. February 2017, one of our children was diagnosed with an ultra rare auto-immune called Juvenile Dermatomyositis. It is a rare muscle and skin disease. Our daughter went from a normal child to not being to lift her hands above her head or lifting her head off a pillow. She couldn't walk up stairs and had to roll out of bed. Thank goodness we discovered Chicago had a research hospital for her disease at Robert E. Lurie's Children Hospital (Northwestern) in Chicago. I, as her mom, continue to take her to appointments. This past year we had over 100 appointments. Now, looking at her you would not know she is fighting this disease. Her biggest complaint now is being tired but she has regained most muscle strength. The goal is remission. We continue to raise money for Cure JM as there is no money affiliated with federal funding for these children. She is 1 in a million!
Fast forward to March 2018 when I went for my annual physical. I even checked to see if I was a carrier of an auto-immune as we were trying to check links with my daughter. My bloodwork came out AMAZING and nothing was extraordinary. Since my daughter was out of school for 44 days straight, I pushed off my mammogram until early May. That is when my annual mammogram was not so normal. I had no signs or symptoms! Breast Cancer does not show up in blood work, only mammograms. My Mother's Day weekend was changed forever. I also chose to go to Robert E. Lurie's Hospital in Chicago as they have a women's cancer center directly next to Lurie's Children's Hospital.
At first I was like, "Why me!! I have already had a fight seeing my daughter go through so much this past year!" But, then I quickly realized 'Why NOT me?" I have a platform to make a difference. I have an amazing business, amazing fans, amazing family and an ability to CHANGE the world.
As a current warrior in the fight against breast cancer, I have met so many supporters and survivors on my journey to health. I know how important preemptive screening and regular physicals are, because my own cancer was diagnosed early. It was found only because of a routine mammogram and not because of any other signs.
It is my mission to help our Polish pottery fans take care of their health. Join me in doing the best for YOUR health! My goal is to reach more fans and inspire them to schedule a routine appointment with their doctor.
1 out of 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
As a 42 year old woman, one out of 92 will be diagnosed with breast cancer.
The good news is that most breast cancer has a 92%(or higher) 5 year survival rate if treated early. The only way to diagnosis is through a mammogram.
Doctors recommend scheduling a routine physical every year, especially as you grow older or if you are at risk of developing a medical condition. In addition to regular screenings, women should have an annual breast and pelvic exam. When you hit age 40, it is recommended to have mammograms yearly.
We hope you join Rebecca, and our entire More Polish Pottery family in scheduling an annual physical! We are cheering you on!
